7 Great Ideas for a Family Day Trip to Wimberley
Last week we had the top down on the car for the first time in awhile – perfect weather for a day out and about. Since we had a busy morning we took the afternoon to hang out and enjoy it close to home in Wimberley. If you are looking for a list of things to do on a day trip to Wimberley – this list is a great place to start.
Take a walk at the Blue Hole Trail
Famous for the “Blue Hole” swimming hole in the cold, clear waters of Cyprus Creek, many people don’t know about the amazing hike and bike trails and picnic areas at the Blue Hole Park. 12 Miles of both graveled and paved trails through the trees are a hilly challenge, but taking the back trails is one of our favorite things to do in town. The trails are challenging and sometimes steep with an opportunity to see deer through the trees, tons of birds, and amazing views of the creek. Picnic tables are scattered around the park but it’s so much more fun to take a backpack full of sandwiches and cold drinks and sit in the middle of tranquility. #PetFriendly —————————> my daughter on the trail
Hand-carved Totem Poles Behind Inoz
These are COOL! These carved wooden cyprus tree trunks are amazing. Read the story about the goose that adorns the top of one of these 25-foot tall sculptures. This back yard space of a popular restaurant sits beside the creek is a great place to have a beer and watch the kids run and play. #PetFriendly
Check out the Rock Shop
While you are on the Wimberley square you won’t want to miss the Broken Arrow Rock Shop, a long-time Wimberley store full of beautiful rocks, turquoise, quartz, crystals, etc. Some of the pieces are huge and many of them have museum like descriptions of where they were found and what kind of rock they are. This is a great place to find an inexpensive souvenir of your day for the kids.
(the Wimberley square is Pet Friendly, but you need to leave them outside while you shop)
Grab a Snack
Right next door to Inoz is the Wooden Spoon yogurt shop. Taste test a few flavors, pick your favorite and cover it up with everything your heart desires. My favorite is Coconut with chopped almonds and chocolate morsels!
Papa Hoos – The most amazing homemade popcorn store is right in downtown Wimberley. At least 50 flavors of popcorn in giant tubs made in the back of the shop. You can taste test every one of these brightly colored flavors. The owners and staff are soooo friendly and can offer you a flavor combination you’ve never though of. They also carry about 15 different root beers and cream sodas and the line of Dublin, Texas Sodas (secret – black cherry is the original Dr. Pepper recipe)
Hike up one or both of the twin “mountains”
219 stone steps to the top of Mount Baldy (prayer mountain) provides an amazing view of the entire valley. This long time Wimberley tourist attraction is also a huge favorite for Wimberley locals getting their exercise in (try it three times fast)
Look directly across and you will see the Veteran’s Memorial – a beautiful display of American flags at the top of the Emily Ann Theater trail. Kids will enjoy the life-size Xylophone and other musical instruments as well as a life-size chess board. #PetFriendly
Visit Silo Glass
This neat little shop is owned and operated by a Chester and Elissa who moved to Wimberley after leaving their big city careers to create glass art. They have some beautiful pieces of art including jewelry, sconces, coasters, and much more. Check out their gallery and shop and enjoy a visit with this couple who are thoroughly enjoying their retirement at the Silo on Ranch Road 12.
End your day on the deck at Brewster’s Pizza and Brewery
20-inch pizzas (the largest size available) topped with every meat or veggie imaginable and several flavor suggestions.
This pizza and wing stop is not only a favorite of locals but was recently named “Best Family Owned Pizza Place in Texas.” (Family meaning all 13 kids plus mom and dad).
Brewed-this-morning beer from owner and Brewmaster Bruce Collie is served in heavy glass pint or 1/2 pint goblets.
Check out the memorabilia on display from Bruce’s former career as a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49’ers. (Yes, he has a Super Bowl Ring).
Kids can play in the outdoor kitchen or color inside on a huge chalkboard. #PetFriendly (on the deck)
Whether you are a local enjoying the day, a weekend tourist staying in one of our many cabins or just in town for the day, there’s lots to do in Wimberley. These are just a few of my family’s favorites! ~ JB
